INESSA

As I walk toward the West Wing, the night gets wilder.

The wind pushes against me. It’s almost like it’s trying to send me back to the warmth and safety of my bed.

Stars above me hang like crystals on black velvet.

Wisps of clouds move faster than they usually do, making it appear like time has sped up and the earth is spinning faster.

Out of nowhere, I feel pinpricks against my back.

I get the feeling that I’m being watched.

I turn around, but there’s nothing behind me but my own shadow. But I still feel eyes on me.

Watching.

Waiting.

It could be my own conscience. I know that what I’m about to do is wrong. Maybe the sensible part of me is trying to make me walk away before it’s too late.

But it’s too late.

My heart has already decided.

I want to learn more about Andrei’s life.

Nobody seems to give me anything. Even Aleksandr and Jasmine get all weird whenever I ask about his life before Canada. Aleksandr doesn’t mind sharing stuff about his own life, but he doesn’t talk about Andrei much.

Andrei Zadachin is something of an enigma to me.

I know him, but not really.

I can read his heart, but I can’t read his mind.

His heart is pure and caring. But his mind rebels against everything his heart stands for.

Because of this, I want to learn more about his family.

It’s technically snooping, but the way I see it, I’m just trying to gain a better understanding of who he really is. Where he has lived and…who he has loved.

For me, everything is brand new.

I’m feeling everything for the first time.

But I don’t know if I’m the only girl Andrei has looked at with those eyes. He looks at me like a scientist would look at an invention that finally works after a thousand fails. There’s awe and hope and wonder in those eyes.

It’s all very brief, but I catch it before it fades.

The door to the West Wing opens as soon as I turn the doorknob.

Strange.

I didn’t expect it to be open.

I step into the apartment and close the door behind me.

It has a gothic vibe to it—everything is strictly black and white, illuminated only by the moonlight.

There are no personal touches. No family portraits or souvenirs from the places they’ve been to.

This apartment is purely functional.

It’s just a place to live, nothing more and nothing less.

It’s exactly how I imagined Okasana’s apartment would be. Cold and aloof, just the way she comes off to the world. But if she’s anything like her brother, there’s so much more to her than her hate.

She’s more than her disability.

She’s more than her past.

Over my week here, I learned things about Oksana. I know that before the accident, she was attending a boarding school in Europe.

She was curious as a child.

She asked questions. She found answers she wasn’t supposed to know.

That’s what eventually got her in trouble. My family found her and tried to have her killed. After they assumed that she was dead, they had Andrei sent to prison.
